Sleigh Ride
Unlike the sled rides where trained Huskies take you down the winding trails in the woods, sleigh rides are drawn by horses. They’re more like an antique carriage from an overdramatic fairytale. The horses are well-mannered, and the driver is full of stories and anecdotes about the different landmarks you’ll see on your way. And because it might get chilly out in the open, you’re provided with a blanket to cover your legs. Just sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery, the muted clip-clop of the horses’ hooves on the trail, and the stories of the driver. The tours are available for groups and private tours can be arranged as well. At the end of the tour, treat yourself to a hot toddy or hot chocolate to chase the chill away.
Snowcat Skiing
Winter Park is famous for its powdery snow and great slopes. One such slope that attracts skiers is Jones Pass Trailhead. It’s famous for the special type of skiing you can enjoy there called snowcat skiing. It’s different from downhill skiing, not just in the gear used, but because you’ll need a guide. Tours usually last for a whole day and you can enjoy anything between 7 and 12 runs in one tour. Both safety gear and guides are provided so you’ll know you’re in good hands. But which terrains are used have to do with the expertise of the group. Each group is as strong as its weakest skier. So a group of expert adventurers would mean the tour will take you to some really challenging terrains. Lunch and beer are offered as part of the package. If you prefer guided tours, there are many offered that will take you up the mountain. The Nordic centers also have their own snowshoe trails that you can explore. It’s like walking on snow but using a different pair of shoes. You can rent those snowshoes at the resort or Nordic centers or just bring your own.
