Located in Colorado’s Grand County just west of the capital of Denver, Winter Park was first settled by pioneers in the late 1800s. The town began to grow in size when Denver became of interest to railroad engineers. Hoping to cut through the massive Rocky Mountains, they hired people by the dozens to come work in Winter Park.
This construction was what put Winter Park on the map and is ultimately what left a historical legacy found throughout the town today. Read on to learn about five of our favorite historical sites and Winter Park Attractions!
The Georgetown Loop Railroad
Open May through October, the historic Georgetown Loop Railroad is considered to be one of the country’s greatest railroad engineering marvels. Scenic views, impressive bridges, and loads of historical information make this railroad one of the most interesting non-museum historical sites in Winter Park. Trains still run on the railroad today so hop on and journey back in time. Located just 30 miles South of Winter Park, this train ride and historical site is a great day trip for the family. The Moffat Tunnel
Also considered to be one of the country’s greatest railroad feats, the Moffat Tunnel stretches an impressive six miles from the Winter Park Resort through the mountains of the Continental Divide. It is the sixth longest tunnel in the world and cost $18 million to construct. The tunnel was built over three-and-a-half years with construction tirelessly happening 24 hours each day.
Named after the Colorado railroad engineer William Moffat, the tunnel is still used by trains today. In the winter, the Winter Park Express connects Denver and the Winter Park Ski Resort, making Winter Park easily accessible for Denver’s weekend warriors.
Rollins Pass
Located just five miles from Winter Park, Rollins Pass climbs to 11,660 feet high and offers spectacular views of Devil’s Thumb and the surrounding high peaks of the Continental Divide. The pass was originally used as a toll road for wagons and was later converted into a railroad system by the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad.
The 27-mile railroad pass was strenuous and often dangerous and was abandoned after the Moffat Tunnel was built, which put the train safely underground beneath the rugged Rocky Mountains.
Today, Rollins Pass offers visitors sweeping views of the Rockies and miles upon miles of adventure. The pass is best accessed by car or mountain bike and is open seasonally.
Corona Pass
Another pass to the top of the Continental Divide is Corona Pass, which stops at an old train trestle. Beautiful views of the Winter Park Ski Resort, the town of Winter Park, and the surrounding Rocky Mountains are found throughout Corona Pass.
The 15-mile rough dirt road is located just outside of Winter Park by the Idlewild Campground. The road is best suited for all-wheel drive vehicles for the upper third of the road. For those who make it to the top, enjoy selecting from several trailheads from the end of the road.
Historical Trails at The Winter Park Resort
Throughout Winter Park Ski Resort’s long history, many individuals have made significant contributions to the park’s development. To commemorate them, Winter Park Ski Resort has named over a dozen trails after these people. Bradley’s Bash, Over N’ Underwood, and Mary Jane Trail are just a few of these historical trails located throughout the resort.
Along all of these historical trails, you will find a commemorative sign and brief note about each individual’s contribution to the ski park. Ski through history with this fun and interactive historical location!
