Cross-Country Skiing
If you’re not a fan of the dizzying heights and prefer level ground under your feet, you can still enjoy the snow, but in different locations. There’s ice skating if you don’t like the outdoors all that much or if it’s storming outside. The county has four fabulous Nordic centers specially designed for this quaint sport. Take your pick from YMCA of the Rockies, Devil’s Thumb Ranch, Latigo Ranch, or Grand Lake Touring Center. Each has something the others don’t have, be it the equipment, the rink, or the amenities. Or you can take your sleds and explore level ground outdoors like the brave Vikings used to do. Cross-country skiing is a whole different sport from downhill skiing. It takes more stamina, yet it is more rewarding as you enjoy the winter scenery. Also, it’s free, so that’s another perk.
Ski Biking (or Snow Cycling)
For people who like to try everything at least once, doing the same activities can get boring after a while. This is why new activities are being introduced all the time to satisfy the thrill-hungry visitors. Ski biking is one such sport that combines the best of two worlds: skiing and mountain biking. The way this novel sport works is as follows: You strap a pair of skis on your feet, then straddle a strapping ski bike and off you go on your snow adventure. For snow cycling, you substitute a ski bike with a snow cycle. The difference is in the speed with which you make your way between the pine trees and down the snow-blanketed slopes. For an extra bang, try night snow cycling. It’s a riskier sport, but some people are daredevils and taking risks is part of the fun. Night snow cycling is only available on weekends.
Dog Sled Rides
Santa has his reindeer to pull his sleds, but you can have Huskies pull yours! It’s true you won’t be able to cross the night sky. Still, don’t let that discourage you. These Huskies are smart enough to take you across the trails and bring you home safe. Also, they’re very friendly. The woods won’t look the same once you have crossed them on a sled. Everything looks new and fresh—the trees, the trails, and even the sky. Different tours are available. After the tour, you can pet the dogs and take a few pics with them.
