Nestled inside of the James Peak Protection Area, Rogers Pass is a multi-use trail that is famous for its abundance of wildflowers and staggeringly beautiful views. Find out more information below on Rogers Pass and what a visit here can add to your vacation experience.

A Dynamic Setting for Hiking and More

Rogers Pass Trail is a moderate out and back trail located just outside of Winter Park. Here, you and your guests can enjoy all kinds of warm-weather activities, from hiking and trail running to mountain biking. The trail is also dog-friendly.

The trail begins with an easy yet invigorating climb through the forest, inclining above the tree line and opening up to panoramic views of Fraser, Winter Park, Byers Peak, St. Louis Peak, Vasquez Peak, Fraser Valley, and the ski resort area in Winter Park. Traversing two switchbacks, you’ll encounter a bend overlooking views of Parry Peak, James Peak, Heart Lake, and a plethora of other mountains surrounding the area.

At this juncture, you have the choice to continue on to the summit of James Peak. The air becomes quite thin at this elevation, but if you push onto the top of the Continental Divide, you’ll be able to look out onto South Boulder Creek to the east and South Fork Ranch Creek to the west. Rogers Pass CO has something for everyone!

You can also begin your hike at Moffat Tunnel, taking the South Boulder Cree Trail at a moderate angle until the trail turns steep. You’ll need to climb over tree roots and rocks. Four miles into the trail, you can see Roger’s Pass Lake. Then, a short but steep climb will lead to a second lake, Heart Lake. This is a good point to stop for a break and take in the gorgeous scenery. After one last steep climb, you’ll reach the Continental Divide and be rewarded with expansive, uninterrupted views covering everything from Winter Park to Boulder before making the easier journey back down the way you came.

Beyond hiking, mountain biking trails in the Idlewild area include the steep singletrack Twisted Ankle and the intimidating multi-use trail Broken Thumb often used by mountain bicyclists, motorcyclists, and ATVs.
