A Popular Trail for Wildlife Watching and Scenic Views
The Creekside Flume Loop spans a total of five miles roundtrip, with the option to break off from the St. Louis Trailhead and simply take the two-mile Creekside Loop if you’re a novice hiker or have limited stamina.
You can access the Creekside Flume Loop easily from Winter Park. Begin at the Winter Park Information Center, following Highway 40 north to the traffic light at the Fraser Valley Center (also known as the Murdoch’s shopping plaza), then turning left onto CR 72. Turn right onto Fraser Valley Parkway (CR 721), following the road until the T-shaped intersection. Turn left onto CR 73 and follow that road until you reach the St. Louis Creek campground. The trailhead will be located near the campground’s entrance.
This trail is particularly lovely during the fall, when the aspen trees change color, though its wildflower blooms during the summer are incredible as well. Among all of the fascinating and beautiful animals that frequent this trail, moose are known to flock to the willow trees throughout the year; be on the lookout, as you’ll want to be cautious around these majestic but powerful and dangerous animals. Along the trail, you can also take in stunning views of Byers Peak, stroll along charming wooden bridges, and more. We recommend bringing a camera with your supply of food, water, and clothing layers!
Some key notes: remember that whatever you pack in, you’ll want to pack out. Remember to yield to bikers and horseback riders on the trail, preferably while letting them know you’re there with a friendly “hello!” Read the trail guidelines ahead of time, and stay on the trail.
